CPD Information

Healthcare practitioners have a responsibility to continually update their professional knowledge and skills for the end benefit of the patient or client.

Conditions for CPD are laid down in the Regulations Relating to the Continuing Professional Development of Dental Technicians and Dental Technologists, made in terms of the Dental Technicians Act, 1979 (Act no 19 of 1979).

SUMMARY TABLE OF POINT REQUIREMENTS

Note: For Category 1, from 2022, points obtained must be from at least two activities

Audit cycle and CPD points. Points are valid for a period of 24 months from the date that the activity took place. At audit, evidence of the CPD activities attended and CPD points awarded for the preceding 24 month period will be required.

The minimum points per category are as follows:

2.     For 2014-2015 cycle:

a.      All Technicians are being audited for the cycle 2014 and 2015 at present, meaning:

i.          Every individual must have obtained a minimum of 50 CEUs in total and must have earned them from the above mentioned categories.

ii.          The audit will indicate one of the following:

1.     Compliant (met the required number of CEUs)

2.     Partially compliant (did do some CEU activities but did not meet the required standard)
This is interpreted as some concerted effort was made by a registered persons to comply.
The outstanding balance from this cycle is transferred to the 2016-2017 cycle and half of this shortfall must be achieved together with the 30 CEUs in 2016. The other half must be achieved by the end of the cycle in December 2017. Registered persons are encouraged to comply

3.     Non-compliant (made no effort to meet the required number of CEUs)
This is interpreted as a deliberate disregard for the instructions given by Council as well as the Continuing Professional Development Regulations R356 dated 12 May 2014. Serious action will be taken against registered persons who fail to fully comply by the end of the 2016 – 2017 cycle.


The outstanding balance from this 2014 – 2015 cycle is transferred to the 2016 – 2017 cycle and half of this shortfall must be achieved togetherwith the 30 CEUs in 2016. The other half must be achieved by the end of the cycle in December 2017. Registered persons are encouraged to comply.

iii.          Failing to comply as per regulation (5) of R356 will result in one of the following sanctions:
In the event of a registered person not complying with the requirements specified in regulation 2 within the prescribed period of time, the council may impose any one or more of the following conditions, namely:

a.      Grant the registered person deferment; and or

b.     Require the registered person to follow a remedial programme of continuing education and training as specified by the Council; and or

c.      Require the registered person to write an examination as determined by the Council; and or

d.     Order the registrar to:

i.          Register the registered person in a category of registration which will provide for supervision regarded as appropriate by the Council;

ii.          Register the registered person in a temporary category of registration for a period of time to allow compliance; or

iii.          Remove the name of the registered person from the relevant register.

3.     For the 2016-2017 cycle:

a.      All registered persons must do 30 CEUs per year and a total of 60 for the full cycle.

b.     Registered persons are strongly encouraged to meet the annual required number and not to delay in making the necessary arrangements in this regard.

c.      Those registered persons who did not get full compliances clearance during the 2014-2015 cycle are reminded of their additional responsibility.
  

4.     Non-compliance by the end of the 2016-2017 cycle must be clearly understood and that serious action will be taken which may ultimately result in the erasure of registered persons names from the register. In the event where this happens a registered person will no longer be allowed to practice his or her profession and will lead to a loss of personal income, and if a dental laboratory contractor it will result in employees losing their jobs as such a dental laboratory will no longer be allowed to employ registered staff.
