Council

The members of the Council are appointed in terms of Section 5(4) of the Dental Technicians Act, 1979 (Act No. 19 of 1979) as amended. The various categories that the members of council are elected into are specified in terms of Section 5(1) of the said Act as members of the South African Dental Technicians Council for a period of five years with effect from 03 September 2013 (2013-2018)

Council consists of the Director of Oral Health of the Department of Health, five persons appointed by the Minister, and two dental technician contractors, two dental technicians or dental technologists and one dentist nominated and elected in the prescribed manner.

Council members meet four times annually and are responsible for preparing financial statements, executive management and exercising control over the organisation's activities.

Registrar/CEO

Mrs P.T. Nkuna is Registrar/CEO of the South African Dental Technicians Council. Her Key Performance Areas are as follows:

  • Responsible for the overall control of the administration of the Council.
  • Overseeing good corporate governance and compliance.
  • Assists Council in developing and formulating policies and strategies.
  • Mobilisation and deployment of Council's resources for the attainment of the strategic and operation objectives.
  • Appoints and ensures competency of personnel to ensure the effective and efficient administration of Council policy, strategies and processes.
  • Development of a performance management system for organisation effectiveness.
  • Fulfils the role and responsibilities as prescribed in terms of the Dental Technicians Act 19 of 1979, as amended.
  • Maintains sound public relations with external stakeholders, including but not limited to health care authorities, the profession, the media and the general public and ensures the promotion of a positive image of Council and administration.

Members of Council

presidentMrs. C. Mokgatle-Makwakwa

President

Catherine Mokgatle-Makwakwa serves on the Council of the South African Dental Technicians Council as a community representative as per Section 5(1) (b) (iii).

She was the principal of Ga-Rankuwa Nursing College and later appointed as Director: International Health Liaison in the Department of Health. During this period, she was appointed by the Minister of Health to serve on the South African Nursing Council representing the Department for two (2) consecutive terms. She is the founder of Lefika la Botshabelo Orphans and Vulnerable Children Centre and a Ministry of Saint Peter’s Lutheran Church.

She has served and serving on several Councils/Boards/Committees including the Tshwane Leadership Foundation, James 1:27 Trust, Siyaphila Youth Development, National Nursing Summit organising Committee (2010), Nursing Education and Training Tusk Team (2011), National Health Research Committee, Ministerial Task Committee on Nursing Education and Training and the South African Nursing Association. She has a Nursing Diploma and a Degree of Bachelor of Arts in Nursing Science.


louisMr. L.A Steyn

Vice President

Louis Steyn is the Head of the Department of Dental Sciences at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology. He serves on the Council as a dental technician/technologist attached to a training institution where dental technician/technologists are trained as per section 5 (1) (b) (ii). As an accomplished educator, he has made a valuable contribution towards the education and training of dental technician/technologist over many years.

He has presented many papers since 1979 on an array of topics, ranging from Dust and other Health Hazards in a Dental Laboratory, to presentations on the new qualification structure for dental technology which includes the proposed mid-level diploma and Professional Degree.

The latter leading to a MHSc in Dental Technology intended for those who intend pursuing an academic career. He was honoured by the Dental Technology Association of South Africa as “Educator of the Year” in 2011.


peri Dr MM Mothopi-Peri

Council Member

Dr. Matshediso Mothopi-Peri is a Specialist Prosthodontist in the School of Oral Health Sciences at the University of the Witwatersrand. She serves on the board as a dentist attached to a university having a dental faculty as per section 5 (1) (b) (i). She has a Master’s Degree in Dentistry (Prosthodontics) and has carved out an illustrious teaching career spanning from 2006 to date. She has lectured both nationally and internationally in subjects relating to Dentistry and the speciality of Prosthodontics.

She is currently a Specialist/Consultant/Lecturer in the Department of Oral Rehabilitation in charge of the Maxillo-Facial Prosthetics Clinic at the University of the Witwatersrand. She is also a member of the Head and Neck clinic and the Cranio-facial clinic at the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital. She belongs to the International College of Prosthodontists, International Team of Implantologists and the International Society of Maxillofacial Rehabilitation.


briscoe Mr. P Briscoe

Council Member

Patrick Briscoe is elected onto the Council as dental technician contractor under Section 5 (1) (c). He is the laboratory owner of Briscoe Dental Laboratory and specializes in Crown & Bridge, Plastics and Orthodontics. Mr Briscoe was a Moderator for 3rd & 4th years at Durban Institute of Technology, Dental Technology Department.

Mr Briscoe was Chairman of the liaison Committee and Chairman of KZN organising Committee for the DENTASA AGM

 

 


baloyi Dr. Nosipho Baloyi

Council Member

Dr Nosipho Baloyi is a qualified dentist, registered with HPCSA. She serves on the Council as the dentist nominated and elected in the prescribed manner as per section 5 (1) (e). She obtained her Bachelor's Degree (BChd) from the University of the Western Cape in the year 2000.

Her dental clinical experience includes:

- Community Service,
- Public service with the Department of Health and
- Private practice


rammila Miss B.M.P Rammila

Council Member

Boitumelo Rammila is a qualified and practicing dental tecnologist. She is a Council members appointed to serves under the category of dental technician/technologist employee under Section 5 (1) (d).

Ms Rammila started working at the Brooklyn Dental Laboratory(2007-2008) which specializes in Crown and Bridge work, mainly porcelain, waxing up copings and zirconium copings through a CAD/CAM (Lava 3M) system. She then went and worked at the MNS Dental Laboratory (2009-2010) where she did mostly plastics and gold crowns and inlays. In March 2010 She did sessions at Medunsa until January 2012, working on plastics only. She then joined the Witwatersrand Dental Laboratory where she was doing all CAD/CAM cases, working with students and registrars. She is currently employed at the Pretoria Oral Health Centre.
